INTRODUCTION PART I: SUPPLIES

1)    A Study Bible

My favorite is an application study Bible in a NIV translation you can find the one I have here. You do not NEED this Bible; this is what works best for me.

2)    Journaling Bible OR notebook OR a printed off passage from biblegateway.com

It is great to be able to have a journaling Bible that you can write and keep your notes with the passages. You can find a few here, here and here.

  • You also can keep a separate notebook of notes if you prefer.

  • Or you can print off a passage from Bible Gateway and take your notes on that printed piece of paper.

3)    Phone App: Study Bible (IOS)

This app is FREE, and it is a game changer. Each verse is explained in contest with history. This is so helpful when digging deep in the word.

4)    Dictionary OR Google

It is great to have a dictionary or google on hand. Sometimes, the Bible uses words that you need more understanding on to comprehend what a verse is saying.

5)    Other Bibles in different translations OR the Holy Bible App

It is very helpful to cross reference with other Bible translations. I recommend the NIV, KJV, NKJV and ESV translation. If you do not have these Bibles, use the FREE Holy Bible app in the app store. You are able to change from different translations all over the Bible.

INTRODUCTION PART II: HOW TO STUDY YOUR BIBLE

* Disclaimer there are so many valuable ways to study the bible. The way I am suggesting below is what I have found to help me the most personally and is what I am suggesting.

 1)    Pray before you start

This is the hardest part for me honestly. I get so wrapped up in studying I forget. But this is very important for you to pray for God to open your heart and to reveal things to you through the word.

 2)    Pick a passage in the Bible from a topic or start with a book in the Bible

 3)  Read the passage one time through.

Ask yourself what you think the main idea is?

4)    Read each verse, then read the commentary from your study Bible and the Study Bible App.

Take notes of the items/facts that stand out to you. Draw arrows to each of the notes and color code with the box, arrow, and the word/passage highlighted so you can find it.

5)    Google OR look up in a dictionary any words that you might need more clarity on.

This could be a very common word that you might hear all the time.

6)    Research the person that is being talking about.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Who is the book about? OR What is the book about?

  • What is the purpose of this passage?

  • What do we learn from this passage or person?

7)    Compare this passage with other translations.

Use other Bibles or use the Holy Bible App. This is helpful to see what other important words and commentary other translations say.

8)   Review your notes and make connections to your personal life.

9)     Highlight the notes and connect them to each point

  • Go back through the passage and read your notes again. Connect each point, note and passage with the same color highlighter so you can easily find each point when you refer back to this passage.

  • Reviewing what you just read will help you retain what you just learned.

10)     Pray

Pray to God about what you just learned. Ask for help as you apply this to your life. Ask Him to show you areas you need to work on (WARNING: A BOLD PRAYER) and his grace to help you.
